Michael Turney

Michael brings over 20 years of experience in the historic resource management and heritage resource consulting field, two B.Sc degrees (in Archaeology and Geography), and a M.A. in Archaeology from the University of Calgary to the table. Michael has held over 140 archaeological permits within Alberta alone. Michael has a broad base of knowledge spanning ancient prehistoric technology, early Euro-Canadian culture material, and the historic built environment. Besides his extensive background in Alberta archaeology, Michael’s past work experience includes archaeological investigations in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Northern Ontario, Idaho, Missouri, Panama, and numerous islands in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean. He has had a long and active interest in rock art, having visited most rock art sites outside of Writing-on-Stone before he completed his undergraduate degree. He has recently just co-authored a paper on the presence of Vertical Series and Foothills Abstract rock art at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. Michael worries that he isn’t fun but in is his spare time you might find him practicing martial arts, reading a book, hiking in the backcountry (without a shovel), or exploring an ancient skill that has not been practiced for several 100 years.
